Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships at The University of Sydney

The Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (EIPRS) is a scholarship for international students scheme funded by The Australian Department of Education, Science and Training. The scholarship is a tuition fee scholarship and open to eligible candidates who are commencing full-time enrolment for the first time in the Higher Degree by Research (HDR) in Australian higher education institutions, including the University of Sydney.

Applications are assessed on academic merit and research potential. In addition to the Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship, the University of Sydney awards International Postgraduate Award (IPA) to Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship holders. The IPA is a living allowance/stipend scholarship awarded to all Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship holders.

Recipients of the Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship will be automatically awarded the International Postgraduate Research Award (IPA) payable as stipend. The duration of the Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship is up to three years for a doctorate (PhD) candidature and up to two years for a Master’s by Research. Approximately 30 Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship are awarded each year. Recipients may commence their study during semester 1 (March) or Semester 2 (July).

Students who have commenced their research candidature at the University during 2007 but were not considered for the 2007 Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship last year due to the timing of their application and subsequent enrolement and would like to apply for a 2008 Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship should complete the the special Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship application form (244kb pdf). This form MUST be received at the International Office by 31 August 2007.

My name Chandra jiwa praja. I was graduated in 2005 English department Brawijaya University, Malang, Indonesia. now I am working at St. Albertus Senior High School as an english teacher in malang. I’m, indeed, so much intersting in studying Culture. Cultural studies has been challenging all my logic, attention, and even my breath (ya.. I even often stop breathing for about 6 lines of Derrida’s ‘of grammatology’, or Marx’s very Sharp C-M-C explanation on his Das Kapital vol 1. or even Frasca’s Ludology theory that inspired me to conduct game analysis as my thesis project.) But in doing my reseach on game I have some difficulties with my ‘old-fashioned-thinking lectures. they insisted that game or even ludology could not be regarded as literature and therefore my thesis should be revised. but I keep on my stand. I said to them that I would prove that game deserve to be traited as other genres of literature. I proved them that games are a legitimate cultural form that deserves critical analysis in schools just as film, television and literature do. the debate was so long and tiring, until finally they can accept and agree with my analysis. threfore, I think, it will be great for me if I can develope my discourse about media, culture, and literature in your university. And hopefully I can give my little constribution to the cultural studies community. But ‘fortunetly’ I encounter problem in financial, indeed, therefore I can not afford for master degree charges by myself. I hope that Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarshipscan respond my problem and grant me scholarship to continue my post graduate study and my research on culture. I’m Tika Larasati, graduate student in theoretical linguistics at Universitas Indonesia, majoring in sociolinguistics. I’m writing a thesis based on the conversation analysis theory of harvey sacks. I would like, once my thesis is done, use it as a postgraduate research basis in order to expand my research into the domain of applied linguistics. Melalui surat ini, saya mengharap kiranya ada institusi/instansi yang berkenan memberikan saya kesempatan gratis untuk melanjutkan jenjang S2 di dalam maupun luar negeri dengan target program studi Linguistics.

Keinginan ini sudah lama saya pendam di dalam benak dan hati saya, namun saya merasa barangkali itu hanya sekadar impian dan angan-angan yang mustahil dapat saya capai. Mengapa demikian? karena saya terganjal oleh ekonomi, demikian juga orang tua saya di kampung juga mengalami hal yang sama, yakni terjepit oleh ekonomi.

Bayangkan saja, ketika saya ingin melanjutkan studi S1 ke Kota Medan, orang tua saya terpaksa harus menjual sawah agar niat saya untuk kuliah dapat mereka penuhi. Dalam menjalani perkuliahan, untuk meringankan beban orang tua, saya pun mesti tinggal di mesjid selama hampir 2 tahun. Di samping itu, saya juga mencari tambahan dengan mengajar mengaji Al-Qur’an dan private les anak-anak. Selain itu, saya juga di waktu libur sering mengisi kegiatan demi menambah biaya hidup di perantauan, saya harus bekerja sebagai seorang kenek bangunan, penjual telur. Namun terakhir ketika saya duduk di akhir semester jaringan saya bertambah karena saya mulai aktif mengikuti sejumlah organisasi, dari situ pengalaman dan relasi saya bertambah. Lantas, kehidupan ekonomi saya sedikit terbantu, karena saya sudah mulai bekerja dengan lebih baik. Kala itu saya bekerja sebagai wartawan di sebuah majalah Muhammadiyah, namanya Gema Tajdid: dari sana karir jurnalistik saya menanjak menjadi wartawan di sebuah media harian terkenal di Sumatera Utara, namanya Medan Bisnis.

Di samping memenuhi kebutuhan pribadi dengan penghasilan yang pas-pasan, sejak awal kuliah saya juga harus ikut membantu biaya pendidikan 2 orang adik saya dan itu berlangsung hingga saat ini.

Waktupun berlalu, saya pun akhirnya berhasil menamatkan kuliah saya. Saya sangat bersyukur kepada Allah swt, karena tanpa-Nya saya mustahil bisa mendapatkan itu semua.

Keadaan sulit seperti ini sudah lama saya alami, dimulai sejak saya duduk sebagai santri di sebuah Pesantren. Namun demikian, saya berpandangan kesedihan dan kesusahan bukanlah suatu hal yang perlu dikeluhkan, karena hal itu merupakan cobaan, tantangan, liku-liku dan variasi hidup yang harus dijalani setiap manusia. karena, banyak fenomena terjadi yang berawal dari kesusahan berakhir dengan kesenangan. Dan tidak sedikit pula fenomena yang berawal dari kesenangan, ternyata di masa depannya berakhir dengan kesusahan.

Akhirul kalam, sekali lagi saya bermohon kepada Bapak/Ibu pengelola dana beasiswa untuk dapat kiranya mempertimbangkan permohonan saya ini. Atas Perhatiannya, sebelumnya saya ucapkan terima kasih. Wassalam
