  71. Dr. Fufa - October 24th, 2008 at 7:07 am

    Dear Sir/Madam,

My name is Dr. Fufa Abunna Kurra, Ethiopian. This is my application for the graduate opportunity of the Doctoral Programmes Scholarship. I have got a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in July 1999 and degree of Masters of Science (MSc) in Tropical Veterinary Epidemiology in August 2006 from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. Currently, I am delivering lectures of Animal Physiology and infectious diseases to Veterinary Medicine students and animal physiology to Biology students of the University at an Assistant Professor position. Even though, I am an Epidemiologist in specialization I give the above courses to my students due to the lack of man power in my University.

My main motivation for applying to the Doctoral Programmes in the management and health constraints of oxen (Draught animal) in Ethiopia is my past unfulfilled passion to advance in this issue. Draft animal power has been harnessed for agricultural purposes for thousands of years. Although tractors have superseded draft animals for farming in the developed world during the last 50 years, draft animal technology remains a relevant farm technology in many parts of the developing world mainly for economic and agro-ecological reasons. Purchase and maintenance costs of tractors are high in many countries in sub-Saharan Africa. These factors confer a comparative advantage on draft animal technology, which is less expensive than tractor power for small-scale farmers who make up the majority of rural communities. In addition, certain fields such as those on steep or terraced hillsides and in muddy river valleys are often inaccessible to tractors. Draft animals are therefore the only means, other than hand labor; farmers have for cultivating these lands. In my country Ethiopia, 99% of the agricultural process is performed by Oxen. There is less attention given to these animals even though they are performing inestimable activities to my poor farmers.

Therefore, I have strong interest to upgrade my education in the field of management and health aspects related to these animals by approaching some novel methods and protocols for the improvement of health and management of Oxen or draught animals. As to my career objective, I have a dream that I become an asset for my poor country in improving livestock production and productivity via creating good environment for breeding and genetics research, understanding the physiological and patho-pysiological parameters of animals and its application. This could help me to contribute to the development process of making my country’s poverty history and filling the gap of skilled man power in the area of these animals since my University is the newly established Universities by the Ethiopian government.

In my country, the government is committed in working poverty reduction strategy. Hence, I have strong covenant in participating through the process of making poverty history in the nation. This will be materialized only if I have upgraded my knowledge through further education and work with the community in the grass-root level.

Your institute can thus help me in realizing my dreams. As past my career it also adds knowledge and confidence in my current job. Above all, it is a good opportunity to exchange knowledge with colleagues abroad and hence, I can appreciate the knowledge gap and unfulfilled passions that I have. The scholarship also inspires me to exploit untouched potential that was not used due to lack of access to use it and develop into new thinking on the current situation in my work area and country at large.

I hope I will be accepted as an applicant and beneficiary of institute of Doctoral Programmes in the area of problems related to Oxen of my country, because these animals are the blood vessels for the farmers of my country. I know that admission to the program is competitive, but I am qualified and eager, and cope with all of its challenges. I am looking forward to hearing your response soon.

Lastly, I would like to extend my gratitude to your office for giving this opportunity for such students like me. It is so inspiring being motivated by passion, generated by vision, produced by conviction and ignited by purpose.

    Yours sincerely,
    Fufa Abunna (Dr>)

    1.0 INTRODUCTION:

    1.1 General

When populations were far smaller than today, most societies were able to live in balance with their natural environment. As numbers expanded, man had a greater impact on the land through clearance of forests for farming and in order to obtain fuel, animal grazing, settlement and construction materials. In most cases this was a gradual process and social groups were able to develop often-complex systems for exploiting natural resources on a sustainable basis. More recently, human populations have increased very rapidly, especially in developing countries, and demand for food, fuel, settlement and grazing has grown alarmingly. At the same time, changing economical and social conditions have undermined or destroyed traditional systems of land resource management. Sustainable land use and development means that the present populations (human, fauna and agro-flora) should reap benefits from land resources at a rate that will not compromise the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs (FAO, land use planning, 1993).

Land is much more than solid surface of the earth. It includes soils and rocks beneath, the atmosphere with its climates, the cyclic interchange of water between the sky, the ground, the rivers and the sea, and the whole mantle of living things (biosphere), both plant and animal. As a factor of production, it is the most fragile of all among others including labour and capital. It is fixed in supply, not transferable and marvelously varied in composition below, on the surface and above. The variations could be natural or man made. This variation is the major trigger for international trade and comparative advantage in production and marketing of certain goods. This variation has sometimes led to wars and signing of trade covenants and treaties as is the case with oil fields, minerals and forest species. Sometimes boundary and territorial conflicts arise from this phenomenon. All this is subject to the aims, abilities and stupidities of the human population. A single change in any aspect of the land can precipitate a change in many others e.g. global warming resulting from the ozone layer depletion could lead to a rise in sea level due to melting polar ice (Karpagam. M, Environmantal Economics, 1996).
Human activities have contributed immensely to the increase in green house gases in the atmosphere. For example industrial emissions, burning of fossil fuels and the felling of trees are now producing record levels of carbon dioxide. The world standing forest is estimated to hold 200 000 million tons of carbon, which will release carbon dioxide if burnt. Both locally and globally trees and grass play a vital environmental role especially on climate as they circulate oxygen, nitrogen, control soil erosion and regulate humidity and act as a sink for carbon dioxide. Nature is bountiful, but it is also fragile and finely balanced. There are thresholds that cannot be crossed without endangering the basic fabric of the life support system. Today, we are close to many of these thresholds on the globe (P.M Driessen and N.T Konijn, Land use systems analysis, 1992)
Environmental damage has three damaging effects. It harms human health, reduces economic productivity and leads to the loss of amenities. The primary task of development is to eliminate poverty. Development is about improving the well being of people. Raising living standards and improving education, health, and equality of opportunity are all essential components of economic development. The fact that environmental damage hurts people both today and in the future provides additional grounds for rethinking our measurement of progress (World Bank Report, 1992). Our children on the other hand, do not just inherit our pollution and resource depletion but also enjoy the fruits of our labour in the form of education, skills and knowledge (human capital), as well as physical capital. They may also benefit from investments in natural resources, improvements in soil fertility and reforestation, for example. Alleviating poverty is both a moral imperative and prerequisite for environmental sustainability. The poor are both victims and agents of environmental damage. About half of the world’s poor live in rural areas that are environmentally fragile, and they rely on natural resources over which they have no legal control (FAO, The State of Food and Agriculture, 1995)
Land hungry farmers resort to cultivating unsuitable areas –steeply sloped, erosion prone hillsides, semi arid land where soil degradation is rapid; and tropical forests where crop yields on cleared fields frequently drop sharply after just a few years especially with propagation of low yielding crop varieties e.g. open pollinated as opposed to certified hybrids ( C.A.J.M de Bie, Analysis of Agro-Ecosystems, 2000). Desertification is a creeping vice. About 65 million hectares of once productive land and 850 million people are threatened with desertification worldwide. There is need to review the extent and cause of desertification, transferring experience among countries, increasing scientific input, initiating studies on issues such as the carrying capacity, migration and profitability (World Bank Report, 1992)

    1.2 DESCRIPTION OF STUDY AREA:

Zambia is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, and has a total surface area of
752 653 square kilometers. She is located between latitudes 8 and 18 degrees south of the equator and longitudes 22 and 33 degrees east. Time calculation is based on longitude 30 degrees east of Greenwich meridian. Its neighbours are Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Angola, Botswana, Namibia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Up to 1953, Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) and Nyasaland (Malawi) were a federal Government under the British rule and the Governor was Sir Roy Welensky. In 1964 Northern Rhodesia became Zambia after attaining independence from the British. The official language permanently remained English and Zambia is a very active member of the Commonwealth. A larger part of Zambia is on the Central African Plateau between 1000 and 1600 meters above mean sea level. The plateau in Zambia is on an altitude of around 1300 meters above mean sea level and is incised by large rivers and the alluvial plains of the Zambezi, Luangwa, Luapula, Chambeshi and Kafue rivers form expansive wetlands.

In tropical Zambia, the temperatures are modified by altitude. There are three seasons: the cool dry (April to Augustl), hot dry (August to November) and hot wet (November to April). Average temperatures range from a mean monthly minimum of about 10 degrees Celsius in June and July to a mean monthly maximum of 30 degrees Celsius in October and November. Most of the rainfall is concentrated over the period November to March. In the upper Kafue river basin the rain season normally starts in October. However, rainfall varies from 700 millimeters in the south to 1500 millimeters per annum in the north with approximately 1200 to 1300 millimeters on the Copperbelt province. Zambia has nine provinces namely Southern, Lusaka, Central, western, Northwestern, Luapula, Northern, Eastern and Copperbelt, each with an administrative capital while the national capital is Lusaka.

The Copperbelt province is situated in the upper Kafue river catchments basin. The water flow regime of the upper Kafue river basin is influenced by human interventions in addition to geophysical characterististics of the basin. A number of water use and management activities have been and are taking place. Several water rights are issued to abstract water from the Kafue River and its tributaries for meeting demands from agriculture, domestic and industrial activities (in particular mining in which Zambia is the world’s third largest producer of copper). At the same time, large volumes of water are also pumped from deep mines, a considerable portion of which directly returns to the Kafue river system. In addition waste water generated by the various water use activities that are not related to mining also have return flows that end in the Kafue River. The upper Kafue consists of limestone, shales, basement complexes granite and gneiss. The Kafue River is considered the life vein of Zambia because of the following:

    1. Copper mining in Zambia is still the single most important contributor to the Gross Domestic product and balance of payments and all mines on the Zambian Copper belt use the Kafue waters and its tributaries for industrial processing and disposal of mining residues. Mines employ thousands of local people.
    2. The Kafue National Park, the biggest game park in Zambia, lies along the Kafue River and it is home to many big and small wild ruminants, cats, amphibians, fish, insects, indigenous plant species, birds, and reptiles representing the widest biodiversity in Zambia. The Lochnivar National Park with the largest bird population and the majority of species found in the Kafue National Park is also along the Kafue River. These game parks are also major tourist destinations every year.
    3. The Kafue flats or wetlands that are of Global significance as identified by the World Wide Fund for nature, are found along the Kafue River.
    4. The entire Zambian capital human population, Lusaka, draws its water for domestic use from the Kafue River.
    5. The Zambia Sugar Company, which employs over four thousand people, draws its water for irrigation from the Kafue River.
    6. The Zambia Hydro Electric power station, supplying electricity to the whole Zambia (industrial and domestic) has its plant on the Kafue river
    7. The Commonwealth Development Corporation Farm, which produces wheat, coffee, paprika and livestock and employing over six hundred people, also draws its water for irrigation from the Kafue River.
    8. Indigenous pastoral (cattle rearing) tribes have lived for years in symbiosis with nature along the Kafue River.
The study area Agro-Ecological Zone covers Northern, Luapula, Copperbelt and Northwestern provinces. Ecologically we call this region three in Zambia. The length of the growing season varies from 120 days to 150 days. Although rainfall is more than adequate, the production of cereal and legume crops may be limited by fewer numbers of sunshine hours, which affect their photosynthetic capacity. Many perennial streams and rivers traverse the landscape presenting great potential for production of irrigable crops. Region three generally consists of highly weathered and leached soils that are characterized by low pH (less than 4.5) and very low reserves of primary nutrients. The soils may be described as leached sandvelt. These are sandy to medium textured soils with high level of leaching on some sites due to the high rainfall regime.
They are usually deficient in phosphorous, nitrogen and some micronutrients. The low soil pH and the associated high levels of aluminum and manganese are often toxic to plant growth. With the application of Agriculture lime, the situation can be reversed making the region the future of Zambian Farming. Though the soils have serious chemical limitations to plant growth, the physical properties are favorable. These include micro-structural stability, deep well drained soils and high soil biological activity. The vegetation of this Agro-ecological Zone can be broadly divided into miombo and mixture of chipya and dry evergreen forest. The miombo, is a two storied woodland with open or lightly closed canopies of semi deciduous trees 15-21m meters high characterized by species of brachystedgia, julbernadia and isoberlina (Fanshawe D.B, 1969)

The high population densities on the copperbelt (38 persons per square kilometer), together with high levels of industrial mining and commercial activities have had an adverse impact on the environment, in particular effects related to water and air pollution, solid waste generation, deforestation and overcrowding in shanty townships and illegal settlements. Mining companies own most of the land surrounding the mine townships. Forest plantations comprise a significant land use besides commercial farming on state land around towns. There is a significant difference in the composition of population on the copperbelt compared to other provinces of Zambia, with higher figures of males than that of females. There are more females than males on the national level. This is due to large numbers of males seeking employment on the copperbelt mines. The population of Zambia totals over ten million people and the copperbelt, small in size as it has over 1 500 000 inhabitants (Central Statistical office, 2000 census).

    2.0 PROBLEM STATEMENT:

The Kafue River and its tributaries and the human economic activities along its course have an immense contribution to the economic growth of Zambia. With copper mining effluents being discharged into the Kafue River at record rates, the resulting pollution has or will affect human, plant (including irrigated agriculture) aquatic, amphibian and terrestrial animal life (Zambian Enviro-line magazine, October 2003). The detected chemical species in the waters of the Kafue and surrounding farm soils include lead, sulphates, copper, manganese and their derivative compounds. Some have concentrations beyond existing standards for plant and animal health (including human) requirements (D.A Kaotze, 1996). Agricultural yields have in some cases depressed by significant margins and domestic water has become polluted which in turn affect human health (World Development Report, 1992) The human population on the copper belt is growing at the rate of over 3.1 % per annum and this has created pressure on food needs, fuel and settlement, which consequently increase the demand on limited land resources. This is compounded by factors such as poor farming practices, illiteracy and widespread poverty resulting from retrenchment of persons who previously worked in the copper mines. Zambia underwent a privatization process of all formerly nationally owned companies from 1991 to 2001 through the World Bank’s September 1991 Structural Adjustment programme, which affected mainly the semi-skilled people.

    2.1 RESEARCH QUESTIONS:

    a) What are the concentrations of lead, sulphates, manganese and copper in the Kafue River and nearby soils in relation to plant, animal and human safety standards?
    b) What are the sustainable effluent disposal options on the Kafue river basin area and who are the stakeholders?

    2.2 METHODOLOGY:

    - Review of literature on similar or related work.
    - Secondary qualitative and quantitative data on climatic, soil and water analysis
    - Primary qualitative and quantitative data based from socio-economic surveys of relevant communities and institutions.
    - Use of modeling software
    - GIS and Remote sensing tools

old .after along journey and tedious work in the faculty for not less than 7(seven)years of stay
.since i am from poor country (third world country )in addition i am from the poorest and uneducated

    Mr. Sheku M. Kanteh
B.Sc.Agric.Gen. (Njala University College/University of Sierra Leone)
M.Phil. Crop Protection (Njala University College/University of Sierra Leone)

A Research Proposal in the Department of Crop Protection, School of Agriculture, Submitted to the Board of Post Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy

    2009
    1.0. INTRODUCTION
Cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp] is an important food and fodder legume crop in the semi-arid tropics covering Asia, Africa, Southern Europe, Southern and Central America ((Jackai et al., 1985). Besides being an important food crop, it can improve soil fertility, prevent soil erosion by improving ground cover, help control some species of striga on other crops in rotation with it, and also provides nutritious animal feed (IITA, 1996). With over 25% protein (on dry weight basis) in its seeds and tender leaves, cowpea is a major source of protein, minerals and vitamins in the daily diets and thus it positively impacts on the health of women and children (Davis et al., 1991).
In Africa, cowpea is often cultivated by small-scale farmers. Nigeria is the largest producer and consumer of cowpea with about 5 million ha area and about 2.4 million tons production annually. Niger Republic is the next largest producer with 3 million ha and over 350,000 tons production annually. Northeast Brazil grows about 1.5 million ha of cowpea with about 491,558 tons production which provides food to about 25 million people. In the southern USA about 40,000 ha of cowpea is grown with an estimated 45,000 tons annual production of dry cowpea seed and a large amount of frozen green cowpeas. India is the largest cowpea producer in Asia and together with Bangladesh, Indonesia, Mianmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Phlippines, Thailand, and other far eastern countries; there may be over 1.5 million hectares under cowpea in Asia ().
Despite its importance, cowpea yields are relatively low, averaging 90%
Calculated as mean visual estimate of insect pest damage level per affected plant

Objective (iii): identify the class of chemical compounds that are effective in controlling insect pests and weeds
From data collected in objective (ii), plant materials that are found to be effective in controlling insect pests and weeds will be subjected to chemical analysis to identify the class of compounds that are responsible for the plant’s biological activity.

Objective (iv): determine the effect of the three plant extracts on the growth and yield performance of cowpea.
Crop data will be collected from the middle rows per plot, excluding the border rows. Ten (10) plants will be randomly selected and tagged per plot for data collection. The following pre- and post-harvest data will be collected:
    Pre-harvest data:
 plant height: measured from ground level to the apex of the upper most leaf./plot
 number of leaves/plant: (all fully expanded leaves)

 Plant materials (botanicals): Leaves and stem of three plants {Chromolaena odorata (L. Poit), Carica papaya, and Mangifera indica} will be collected from within the Njala University campus, National Agricultural Training Center and around the Monkode and Mosongo community. Plant material will be applied at a rate of 500g and 1000g per plot respectively. Plant materials will be applied 24hours before planting and @ 4 weeks after planting

Objective (i): determine which application method is effective against major insect pests and weed flora of cowpea
The following methods will be used to apply plant materials per treated plot:
 Grind and Incorporate into soil: GInc
     Spreading without grinding: Sp
 Incorporate into soil without grinding: Inc
The effect of each application method on insect pests and weeds will determine by collecting data from the treated plots only. The following data will be collected:
    A. Weed species count per control plot:
Weed data will be collected plots @ 50% flowering (35-36 Days after Planting). A quadrant with dimension 0.5m X 0.5m, will be thrown twice per plot and all different weed species within the specified dimension counted and identified. A plant taxonomist will be contacted for scientific identification of weed species collected. In addition, weed species will be classified based on there morphology (i.e. broadleaf plant, sedge, and grass) and life cycle.
    B. Weed biomass (fresh and dry weight of weeds) per treated plot:
Fresh and dry weight (g) of weed samples will be collected @ 50% flowering (35-36 Days after Planting) to determine % dry matter content. The fresh weight of weeds/treated plot will be first determined, and then contents put in paper packets (well labelled), and thereafter dried in a mud oven heated with coal for one day. This will be done to remove excess moisture. Samples will then be transferred into an electric oven with temperature set at 70oC for 3 days, after which the dry weight will be determined using a weighing scale. The % dry matter content of weeds will be determined using the formula below:
% dry matter content = Fresh weight of weeds (Kg) — Dry weight of weeds (Kg) x 100
    Fresh weight of weeds (Kg)
    D. Insect pests count and identification per treated plot: Data will be collected only in treated plots @ 4 weeks after planting, and thereafter @ two weekly intervals onto date of harvesting. Sticky traps will be prepared using a rectangular shaped vanguard on which an adhesive (altorarat) will be carefully rub, and placed at strategic locations in each treated plot. In addition, a beating sheet will be spread underneath plants with high density, and then the plant shaken carefully to dislodged insects hiding within the plants. The number of different insect species collected will be recorded, and identified based on scientific nomenclature. Mortality rate will be determined by counting the number of dead insect species.

Objective (ii): determine the effect of application methods on the growth and yield performance of cowpea
Crop data will be collected from the middle rows per plot, excluding the border rows. Ten (10) plants will be randomly selected and tagged per treated plot for data collection. The following pre- and post-harvest data will be collected:

I am a Kashmiri guy holding Master as well as Master of Philosophy Degrees in Botany from Department of Botany, University of Kashmir and Department of Biotechnology, University of Jammu, J & K State, India. I was working as Junior Research Fellow in Directorate of Biotechnology (DBT) sponsored project on apples of Kashmir Himalaya titled “Germplasm assessment, molecular characterization and gene tagging in apple”. We have collected one hundred and forty cultivars of apple germplasm from Kashmir Himalaya. The valley of Kashmir is a rich repository of apple germplasm, where more than 265 cultivars and horde of folk varieties are grown. Earlier several authors attempted to evaluate the germplasm diversity of apple grown in Kashmir at morphological and chromosomal level. Since, these characters are influenced by environment; there is a need for more appropriate methodology to analyze the diversity at molecular level. And DNA based markers offer a viable tool to assess the diversity of the taxon at DNA level as they remain uninfluenced by the environment and are helpful in the detection of polymorphism at molecular level. I believe that my educational background and my research interest make me an appropriate candidate for Ph.D. position. If I would lucky enough to have an opportunity to work under your esteemed guidance, I will serve my duty with honesty and sincerity.
I shall be grateful if you kindly provide me favorable response and valuable suggestions to develop my research career with your research group.

    With regards
