The British Chevening Awards General Information & Requirements 2008

The British Chevening Awards General Information & Requirements is a prestigious programme funded by the British Government (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) and administered by the British Council. Since 1984, over 1000 scholarships awarded in Indonesia.

This year up to 35 full scholarships are offered for one year Master degrees at various universities and professional institutions in the UK including courses in media, finance, economics, politics, law, management, engineering, gender, environment, democracy etc. A very competitive scheme, only the best applicants are invited for further test and interview.

Employees, employee’s relatives (or former employees who have left employment less than two years before) of the FCO (Foreign Commonwealth Office), including FCO posts, the British Council and the sponsor will not be eligible to apply for these awards.

Who can apply?
• Indonesian Citizen.
• Age between 25 - 40 years old.
• Excellent first degree with minimum GPA 3.0.
• Adequate level of spoken and written English language.
• Minimum of 2 years full time working experience after graduation from S1.
• Excellent career prospects.
• Commitment to career development, and ability to demonstrate motivation.
• Field of study should be relevant to educational background or current profession.
• We regret that we are unable to receive applications for MBAs.
• Previous recipients of a Chevening scholarship for Masters degrees are not eligible to reapply.
• Must be able to demonstrate future leadership potential and the capacity to play an important role in Indonesia’s development.
• Ability and potential to contribute to future bilateral relations between Indonesia and Britain.
• We strongly encourage candidates from Eastern Indonesia to apply. Subject areas are: Media, International Relations, Environmental Policy, Local Governmental Administration, Democracy and Pluralism.

The Selection process
• Initial selection is based on the quality of the written application. You do not need to attach any documents with the application form.
• Successful applicants will be notified and invited for an English test/interview in January 2008.
• The English test and interviews will be held in Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan and Makassar.
• The results of the interviews will be announced by letter.
• Candidates achieving an IELTS score of at least 6.5, and who are accepted by a UK university for an appropriate subject (approved by the Embassy) will be awarded a full scholarship.
• English language training is included as part of the scholarship )only if required). Candidates from outside Jakarta are supported during the period of the course.
• Whilst undergoing English language training in Jakarta, candidates are briefed by British Embassy and British Council staff and are given guidance on course selection and application procedures.
•The academic year in the UK commences in September/October. After completing the English courses (around May) candidates are normally advised to return to their employment. The British Council then keeps in touch with candidates about their departure arrangements. Further briefing on the departure arrangements is provided one month prior to departure.
•The final number of scholarships granted is determined by the British Embassy.

The application period for 2007 is from 1 September – 16 November 2007.

    Melalui surat ini, saya mengharap kiranya ada institusi/instansi yang berkenan memberikan saya kesempatan gratis untuk melanjutkan jenjang S2 di luar negeri dengan target program studi Linguistics.

    Keinginan ini sudah lama saya pendam di dalam benak dan hati saya, namun saya merasa barangkali itu hanya sekadar impian dan angan-angan yang mustahil dapat saya capai. Mengapa demikian? karena saya terganjal oleh ekonomi, demikian juga orang tua saya di kampung juga mengalami hal yang sama, yakni terjepit oleh ekonomi.

    Bayangkan saja, ketika saya ingin melanjutkan studi S1 ke Kota Medan, orang tua saya terpaksa harus menjual sawah agar niat saya untuk kuliah dapat mereka penuhi. Dalam menjalani perkuliahan, untuk meringankan beban orang tua, saya pun mesti tinggal di mesjid selama hampir 2 tahun. Di samping itu, saya juga mencari tambahan dengan mengajar mengaji Al-Qur’an dan private les anak-anak. Selain itu, saya juga di waktu libur sering mengisi kegiatan demi menambah biaya hidup di perantauan, saya harus bekerja sebagai seorang kenek bangunan, penjual telur. Namun terakhir ketika saya duduk di akhir semester jaringan saya bertambah karena saya mulai aktif mengikuti sejumlah organisasi, dari situ pengalaman dan relasi saya bertambah. Lantas, kehidupan ekonomi saya sedikit terbantu, karena saya sudah mulai bekerja dengan lebih baik. Kala itu saya bekerja sebagai wartawan di sebuah majalah Muhammadiyah, namanya Gema Tajdid: dari sana karir jurnalistik saya menanjak menjadi wartawan di sebuah media harian terkenal di Sumatera Utara, namanya Medan Bisnis.

    Di samping memenuhi kebutuhan pribadi dengan penghasilan yang pas-pasan, sejak awal kuliah saya juga harus ikut membantu biaya pendidikan 2 orang adik saya dan itu berlangsung hingga saat ini.

    Waktupun berlalu, saya pun akhirnya berhasil menamatkan kuliah saya. Saya sangat bersyukur kepada Allah swt, karena tanpa-Nya saya mustahil bisa mendapatkan itu semua.

    Keadaan sulit seperti ini sudah lama saya alami, dimulai sejak saya duduk sebagai santri di sebuah Pesantren. Namun demikian, saya berpandangan kesedihan dan kesusahan bukanlah suatu hal yang perlu dikeluhkan, karena hal itu merupakan cobaan, tantangan, liku-liku dan variasi hidup yang harus dijalani setiap manusia. karena, banyak fenomena terjadi yang berawal dari kesusahan berakhir dengan kesenangan. Dan tidak sedikit pula fenomena yang berawal dari kesenangan, ternyata di masa depannya berakhir dengan kesusahan.

    Akhirul kalam, sekali lagi saya bermohon kepada Bapak/Ibu pengelola dana beasiswa untuk dapat kiranya mempertimbangkan permohonan saya ini. Wassalam

    My name Agung, I’m graduated from Pancasila University Jakarta, Now I’m working as Accountant in a big company that pay less to the employee,
    I’m intrested in this scholarship program, but the requirement are to high for my GPA because my GPA not reach 3.00, can you give me some advise or any alternative for the requiremnt since I can not afford to continue study in S2 or Master Degree due to my financial condition. I wish I could get this scholarship program.

    saya sangat berminat mendapatkan beasiswa, namun dengan keterbatasan IPK saya yang cuma 2,8 serta lulus dari universitas luar jawa yang kurang di perhatikan saya merasa kesulitan mendapatkan beasiswa.
    saat ini saya bekerja pada sekretariat perencanaan dan pengendalian penanganan bencana di instansi pemerintah bekerjasama dengan badan PBB untuk program pembangunan. untuk itu saya ingin kiranya ada yang memberikan beasiswa master dengan fokus mitigasi dan disaster manajemen bagi lulusan dengan IPK kurang dari 3,00.

    Dear all who are seeking scholarships, please do not wait until someone or institution contact you and give information or even all of a sudden give you scholarship! That probably happens, but unlikely, guys.
    Therefore, you must active in finding information yourself. See all the possibilities from universities around the world and all institutions and or agencies (type the name of university that you want to enter), find out whether they offer a suitable program for you, then, apply and submit all the documents they asked. For Ph.D, you must write to the candidate of supervisor first to find out whether he or she is interested in your proposal. See under”Faculty”. So, be ready with proposal first!
    If you have managed to put your email here, I do believe that you can find all information for scholarship that you need. On the top right of this web page, you can see a lot of choices of scholarships, open one by one, go into details patiently, and keep trying. If not this year, you will probably get it next year, or the following year. Come on, fight for the better future, yet make sure you prepare and get YOUR INTERNATIONAL SCORE (IELTS / TOEFL / GMAT / GRE , or other/s that is/are required by the university abroad)
